We set goals early
When you know where you’re going, it’s easier to succeed. We believe parents, students, and tutors should agree by setting clear goals each term. This helps us track student learning and measure success.

Receive a comprehensive lesson report outlining what your child learned and how they’re progressing towards their term goals. We’ll also regularly reach out to check everything’s going well and you’re happy with their progress.

We can work ahead of your school classes because we’re so familiar with the curricula of the local schools our students attend. Treat school like revision and interact with the class and your teacher with greater confidence.
Our Year 5 Courses
Year 6 English
In English class, we’ll cover the fundamentals of reading, writing, listening and speaking and encourage students to read widely. Our program emphasises composition, grammar, punctuation, critical analysis, drafting, editing and presentation skills.

Developing their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding during their primary years puts your child on track for a successful future. We’ll help them work mathematically through concepts, applying problem-solving skills and mathematical techniques, communication and reasoning.

What our Year 6 students develop
Reading skills
At this stage of their development, your child will learn to read complex texts and images independently, respond to textual themes and justify their interpretations of them using their own knowledge, values and experiences. They can identify, analyse and respond to literary devices and techniques used to influence readers and summarise textual information confidently.
Writing skills
We support our students to craft fluent, well-structured, and imaginative written works on more complex topics, helping them expand their vocabulary, critical and grammatical knowledge. Your child will make more considered choices and re-evaluate their work by editing, reviewing, publishing and focusing on common writing conventions.
Numerical skills
We’ll support your child’s progress as they learn efficient number and algebra strategies, pattern recognition, measurement and geometry, statistics and probability. We’ll also help them feel more confident collecting, analysing and evaluating data.
Greater confidence at school
Our Year 5 and 6 students are beginning to use considered language to entertain, inform and persuade audiences. They actively listen, express well-developed and well-organised ideas about literary texts and can respond constructively to others. Your child will be able to gather information and ideas efficiently and respond accordingly.
What you’ll walk away knowing
- How to interpret and analyse information and ideas, comparing content from a variety of media.
- Think critically about ideas and read, recognise and respond to themes and issues within texts using their own knowledge and experience.
- Learn how to spell most common words accurately and employ strategies to spell those they don’t know. Plan, rehearse and deliver presentations as well as selecting appropriate content for different audiences and situations.
- Develop problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and a deeper understanding of statistics and probability.
- Use a protractor to measure angles up to 360° and calculate the areas of rectangles by multiplying the length by the width.
- Record lengths and distances using combinations of millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres
- More complex additions, multiplications, subtractions, and divisions featuring three or more numbers, with and without digital technologies.
- Calculate common quantity percentages (10%, 25%, 50%) and represent them as fractions and decimals.
- Construct 3D prisms and pyramids and sketch their front, side and top views
- Identify and name parts of a circle including centre, radius, diameter, circumference, sector, semicircle and quadrant.
- Find a map location from a given direction (e.g. the town is north-east of Broken Hill)
- Solve numerical word problems with more than one operation (e.g. I have $40 000 to buy a car. The car is $36 118 plus $860 for tinted windows. How much …).
Lesson Breakdown
We ensure your child masters a concept before moving onto the next. One-to-one lessons and small classes focus on each student’s unique learning habits so they can achieve their goals at their own pace. As their knowledge builds, and they can acquire, process and understand new ideas and concepts, class learning speeds up to work ahead of school curricular and maximise results.

Reflect
Together we’ll revisit any Capra homework you’ve found difficult and reinforce what you’ve learned. Working memory decays fast; we’ll use this time to solidify your knowledge and ensure mastery before moving to the next concept.

Theorise
Your tutor will introduce new concepts based on your prior knowledge and level of mastery. We like to do this in a hands-on, interactive way, so you’re fully engaged with the subject matter.

Review
At the lesson's end, we’ll assess that you’ve understood the new concepts covered and can practically apply your newfound knowledge with minimal support. This ensures you can complete your homework for the week.

Christina is studying a combined degree of Arts (International Relations) and Laws at the University of Sydney. She completed Year 12 at Kambala in 2017, achieving an ATAR of 99.85. She believes that every individual has different strengths, passions and personal goals, so her approach to tutoring is to encourage students to create their own success in a style that works for them.

Georgia Velis has been tutoring at Capra since 2008 and has taken a special interest in helping to prepare motivated students for the selective schools and scholarship tests. Georgia studied Microbiology and holds a Masters of Public Health from the University of Sydney.

Nell (B.A. English (Hons) Sydney Uni., Dip. Ed. (Primary) Armidale Uni.) has been teaching and tutoring for over thirty years in primary and secondary schools in Sydney. She has many years of experience as an HSC and Naplan marker. In her teaching, Nell seeks to develop the literacy and critical thinking skills of her students, while fostering an enjoyment of print and film literature.

Rachael is a dedicated, enthusiastic and passionate teacher. In 2012, she achieved first-class honours for Bachelor of Arts degree in Primary Education and in 2015 she graduated from her Masters degree in Education with a distinction. Rachael is passionate about children’s literature, reading and creative writing. She has an excellent understanding of reading comprehension and has delivered comprehension training courses to other teachers. She has also been part of a maths development team and taken part in writing an effective calculation policy. She believes that learning should be exciting and stimulating and works hard to ensure children reach their full potential and achieve their goals. Rachael aims to create a nurturing and supportive learning environment in order to increase children’s confidence and promote a lifelong love of learning.
