Year 3

We’ve developmentally designed our Primary school programs to complement your child’s school curricula perfectly. Our supportive, dynamic, and rich learning environment helps set them up as independent, lifelong learners who are both confident in the classroom and focussed on maximising their results.

How we help students succeed

  • We set goals early

When you know where you’re going, it’s easier to succeed. We believe parents, students, and tutors should agree by setting clear goals each term. This helps  us track student learning and measure success.

  • We check-in frequently

Receive a comprehensive lesson report outlining what your child learned and how they’re progressing towards their term goals. We’ll also regularly reach out to check everything’s going well and you’re happy with their progress.

  • Learn ahead of your class

We can work ahead of your school classes because we’re so familiar with the curricula of the local schools our students attend. Treat school like revision and interact with the class and your teacher with greater confidence.

Our Year 3 Courses

In English class, we’ll cover the fundamentals of reading, writing, listening and speaking and encourage students to read widely. Our program emphasises composition, grammar, punctuation, critical analysis, drafting, editing and presentation skills.

Developing their mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding during their primary years puts your child on track for a successful future. We’ll help them work mathematically through concepts, applying problem-solving skills and mathematical techniques, communication and reasoning.

What our Year 3 students develop

Reading skills

We help your child become an independent reader who can efficiently integrate a range of skills and strategies when reading, interpreting, analysing, and evaluating texts. We’ll encourage them to form a point of view and explore structure, grammar and concepts behind written, visual and multimodal texts.

Writing skills

As we support our primary students’ writing skills to develop, they’ll begin creating imaginative, well-structured and persuasive texts that inform and engage. They’ll feel more comfortable using simple and complex sentences, grammar and punctuation to support their written work and become familiar with drafting, editing, and proofreading strategies to improve their writing for different audiences.

Numerical skills

We’ll support your child’s progress as they learn efficient number and algebra strategies, pattern recognition, measurement and geometry, statistics and probability. We’ll also help them feel more confident collecting, analysing and evaluating data.

Greater confidence at school

Your child will learn to communicate clearly and with growing proficiency across a wide ranges of ideas and information. They can identify how purpose, audience and culture shape ideas and can present their thoughts confidently in class and social situations.

What you’ll walk away knowing

  1. How to enrich their writing with adjectives, adverbs, phrases, conjunctions, pronouns and correct tense and write persuasively and with more complexity.
  2. Expand their understanding of spelling rules and word strategies, knowledge about word families and letter combinations (including double letters).
  3. Give confident presentations by enlivening their work with gestures, facial expressions, pauses, emphases, volume, humour and rhetorical questions.
  4. Read and engage with a wider variety of stories, poems and visual texts.
  5. Use comprehension strategies to build meaning and expand their content knowledge, identify points of view and stereotypes, and describe or compare alternative interpretations.
  6. Develop problem-solving skills, mathematical reasoning, and communication.
  7. Use mental strategies to multiply, divide and subtract accurately and round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand or ten thousand.
  8. Identify, represent and compare fractions involving halves, quarters and thirds.
  9. Measure lengths and distances, and convert units of time,
  10. Determine factors for a given number (e.g. factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12).
  11. Recognise and describe angles, identify and sketch 3D objects, and investigate their use in commercial packaging.

Lesson Breakdown

We ensure your child masters a concept before moving onto the next. One-to-one lessons and small classes focus on each student’s unique learning habits so they can achieve their goals at their own pace. As their knowledge builds, and they can acquire, process and understand new ideas and concepts, class learning speeds up to work ahead of school curricular and maximise results.

  • Reflect

Together we’ll revisit any Capra homework you’ve found difficult and reinforce what you’ve learned. Working memory decays fast; we’ll use this time to solidify your knowledge and ensure mastery before moving to the next concept.

  • Theorise

Your tutor will introduce new concepts based on your prior knowledge and level of mastery. We like to do this in a hands-on, interactive way, so you’re fully engaged with the subject matter.

  • Review

At the lesson's end, we’ll assess that you’ve understood the new concepts covered and can practically apply your newfound knowledge with minimal support. This ensures you can complete your homework for the week.
